MITCHELL — Elkin saw its dual-team season come to an end Thursday night in the regional finals to Mitchell.

After East Wilkes fell to Swain County in the first round Tuesday night, the Buckin’ Elks took down Swain County later that night. They followed that up with a win against East Surry to advance to the regional round.

The match could have gone either way, but it was Mitchell who pulled off a 37-27 win that sent the Elkin faithful home disgruntled. Fans voiced their displeasure to the fact that one referee had a son who goes to Mitchell, which the NCHSAA has since confirmed.

Despite those reports, there are no plans to investigate into the match any further. Mitchell would go on to lose Saturday afternoon to Rosewood in the 1A State Championship.

Up next for the Buckin’ Elks, Cardinals, Rams, and Falcons are the individual regionals that begin later this week. At press time, those brackets were not made public. When made public, they will be posted online at elkintribune.com
