The Elkin High School fencing team secured the Mountain Conference championship for the third straight year on Saturday. As a member of the North Carolina High School Fencing League, perfection was a goal they met, as the men’s team finished 16-0 in regular season action, and the girls finished at 20-0.

Elkin has won the state championship eight times since 2004, and heading into this year’s tournament, it is the favorite. In the program’s history, the team has never finished lower than second in the state.

Individual records for the men’s team were Captain Drake Bogart 29-1; Brandon DeBord 25-1; Daniel Soos 17-9; Avery Atwood 18-10; Patrick Soos 34-2. Women’s team captain Lindsey Shinkle’s individual record was 20-3; Dakota Dudley-Doss was 19-2; Anna Taylor finished with 15-1; and Bianca Soos Recorded 26-5.

The next meet will be the state championships in Chapel Hill, where they’ll take on East Chapel Hill High School, Chapel Hill High School and Coastal Christian Academy of Wilmington.
