Icing is a common sports term. It can mentally disrupt a kicker or shooter in football or basketball, or an infraction in hockey. However, icing took a different meaning this past weekend as a snowstorm kept the athletes away.

Despite the snow ending late Friday night, roads were not cleared of snow yet meaning for high school athletes, the games could not go on. Yadkin County Schools, Wilkes County Schools and Elkin City Schools all have been out of school since last Thursday, and all sporting events in that time frame were postponed.

Unfortunately, it creates a frenzy as athletic directors are scrambling to reschedule games. Entering Tuesday night, teams still didn’t know for sure if Wednesday night’s games would go on as scheduled. If they do, there are some interesting events scheduled for that day.

Sports nuts should enjoy this coming week as Wednesday starts off with the swimming champion of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference being decided. That meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Pilot Mountain.

Rivals clash in Boonville as Starmount and Elkin square off in the basketball version of the Battle of the Bridge. Last time the teams met, the Elkin girls took it to the Lady Rams 49-16. On the boys side, Starmount walloped the Buckin’ Elks early pulling ahead to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter. They went on to win 66-32.

Both the Elkin boys and Starmount girls have won their first games of the season since then, and look improved. It could make for great games.

The theme of rivalries continues, as East and West Wilkes take each other on in wrestling and basketball. The basketball games will be at West Wilkes, and wrestling will take place at East Wilkes High School. Forbush also will try to make up its basketball games against North Surry on the road Wednesday night.

However, at press time, the following games were not posted. They will be posted online at elkintribune.com when there is an update.

Unknown games originally scheduled for Tuesday

Starmount at Ashe County basketball

Forbush v. South Stokes basketball

Elkin v. West Wilkes basketball

East Wilkes v. Wilkes Central basketball
