WILKESBORO — Tuesday night for Elkin basketball saw one game be an instant classic, and another one the Buckin’ Elks would like to forget.
It started with a thrilling 78-69 overtime win over Wilkes Central for the girls. Down 12 with just four minutes left, the Lady Elks (15-1, 6-1 MVAC) went on a scoring rampage to knot things up at 64. The momentum carried over into the overtime period, as the Lady Elks outscored the Eagles 14-5 in the extra frame.
Despite senior Miracle Walters getting into foul trouble, the team made sure that wasn’t going to stop them from putting points on the board. Junior Kylie Thomas had 29 points in the contest, leading the scoring for both teams.
In the overtime period, senior Morgan Randleman was the definition of clutch, scoring eight points and going 5-6 on the free-throw line. Randleman finished with 18 points. Both Walters and Randleman played big parts in the final push to come back at the end of regulation, but it took a complete effort from the entire team just to get there. Junior Corrin Shores had eight points on the night, while another junior Laken Brown had five.
The team had its last game, an overtime loss to East Wilkes fresh in its heads, and while there’s still plenty of room to improve, the Lady Elks enter their next contest in a three-way tie for first place in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
The boys, meanwhile, did not have the night they would have liked, falling 65-23. The Eagles started out the night on a 10-2 run, and never looked back. In the second and third quarters, the Eagles spent life in the fast lane, outscoring the Buckin’ Elks 20-4 and 21-5 respectively.
The loss means the Buckin’ Elks team is still searching for its first conference win as it prepares for a rematch against Starmount on the road. The Elks will hope to start out the game significantly better than they did the first time the two met. At the end of the first quarter, that game was well in Starmount’s hands at 20-0. However, in a rivalry game, and especially after a big loss, anything is possible for these Buckin’ Elks.
