Wrestling championships around the corner

The state tournament for wrestling is looming, and it looks like the stakes are even higher in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

According to the NCHSAA, the No. 1 seed from the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference will earn a bye into the second round of the state championships. The team would meet the winner of the game between a wildcard team and the No. 2 team from the Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference. Additionally, unless it earns a wildcard spot, that No. 1 seed for the Mountain Valley is the only seed guaranteed to be in the playoffs.

Elkin sits at 2-0 overall, while North Wilkes is the only other team who has won a dual meet this season. Elkin’s final regular season match is Jan. 26 at West Wilkes.

The tournament is scheduled to begin Feb. 2 for the first and second round, with the finals scheduled for Feb. 6 for dual team. For individuals, the regionals are scheduled for Feb. 12-13, with the state championship being decided from Feb. 18-20.
