RONDA — After a close game with Ashe County, the East Wilkes Cardinals find themselves still in search of their first conference win this season.

Following a 79-72 loss, the Cardinals (2-9, 0-4 MVAC) can look at some of the positives. The Cardinals were able to claw their way back to within reach after falling behind 47-31 at the half, and being down 17 with just over 4 minutes to play. Behind a season-high 22 points from senior Andrew Nance and a 3-pointer by sophomore Bryce Vestal, the Cardinals were down 72-69 with 1:12 remaining.

However, a 3-point play by Ashe County in response meant the game would come down to the free-throw line, and Ashe County would excel when it needed to the most. Junior Joah Logan had 16 points, while seniors Shareef Ray and Camon Bryan picked up 12 on the night.

The Cardinals travel to Alleghany Tuesday night before hosting Elkin Friday night.
