RONDA — By the end of the first half of Friday night’s game between East Wilkes and Ashe County, the house was rockin’ so much, Stevie Ray Vaughan would have been proud.
Four Lady Cardinals reached double figures in a 66-34 blowout win over the Lady Huskies. The Cardinals knocked down four 3-pointers in the first quarter alone, and by the end of the first half, were up by 27.
“I can’t credit the girls enough for their effort, their intensity, their hustle. … It didn’t matter who I put in, it just didn’t really seem like there was a dropoff there in the first half,” said coach Matt Campbell.
The Cards (6-4, 4-0 MVAC) set the tone early with a 6-0 lead and four 3-pointers in their first five possessions.
The team distributed the ball well, and while senior Chelsea Edwards led the way in scoring with 16 points, it doesn’t begin to describe the team effort for the entire 32 minutes. They proved that they have depth, and that it’s not just one player who’s the x-factor in every game. Along with Edwards, sophomores Alexis Pardue (14), Tess Jolly (12), and Lauren Johnson (11) all proved that they’re going to be hard to beat in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Their next test will be on the road Tuesday night against Alleghany, before hosting undefeated Elkin Friday night.
