The Elkin girls basketball program faced a bit of a challenge this week with some tough opponents, but on Friday night, the team proved it’s going to be tough to beat down the stretch.

The Lady Elks took down the Surry Central Golden Eagles 44-36 to move to 7-0 on the season. Elkin jumped out to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter and kept pace with the Eagles the rest of the way.

“I’m very proud of our half-court offense, it’s much better than it’s been all year long,” Elkin Head Coach Derek Carter said.

Elkin senior Miracle Walters and Surry Central senior Makenzie Mooney each had 17 points in the contest, while Kylie Thomas, a junior for the Lady Elks, had 10. It’s Elkin’s first win not decided by double digits. However, there isn’t cause for alarm as conference play is looming.

“I told the coaches downstairs, ‘That’s what we needed tonight,’” Carter said. “‘What are we going to do when it’s close, when every series counts?’ And I thought the girls responded well.”

Elkin has two games slated for next week, with the first one at home against rival Starmount Tuesday night. Following that, the Lady Elks travel to West Wilkes Friday night. As games begin to become even more crucial, throughout the non-conference games, they’ve learned some valuable things that they can take with them to try and win the conference championship.

“We’ve got to stay out of foul trouble, and keep our options open as far as mixing kids, because we got into trouble the last two nights,” Carter said. “We’re getting there, we just need to execute, execute, and be more persistent.”

Both games for the Lady Elks this week are slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
