BOONVILLE — The Starmount boys and girls basketball teams hosted Mount Airy Wednesday night, falling in both games.
The boys gave undefeated Mount Airy a run for its money, but fell 68-58 in a close game. It’s too early to count out the Rams, who have yet to play a conference game. However, senior Kyler Gregory went down during Wednesday’s game, leaving the Rams in a tight situation. That’s where fellow senior Brandon Prescott stepped up for 28 points to keep the Rams within reach. Gregory’s status for Friday night was not available at press time.
The girls also lost to an undefeated Mount Airy team 67-19. The Granite Bears jumped out to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter, and continued to pile on points. In addition, the Granite Bears had 37 total rebounds, and forced 21 turnovers. The loss extends the Lady Rams’ losing streak to 51 games, but in the grand scheme of things, they’re still in the mix in conference play. Only four teams have even played a conference game, and the team looks significantly stronger than it has in years past. The girls face Forbush Friday night and Elkin Monday night.
Varsity play begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday with the girls hosting Forbush (5-3), and the boys game slated to start around 8 p.m.
