EAST BEND — The field was wet and spongy, and perhaps that helped the Forbush Falcons absorb what they learned earlier this month against North Surry, because on Wednesday night, they destroyed them.

The Falcons defeated North Surry 7-1, with plenty of players having an opportunity for a goal. Last time these two teams played against each other, the Falcons defeated North Surry 3-1, but needed two goals late in the second half to win. This time around, senior Ryan Miller got things started for the Falcons in the fifth minute with a goal, and from there, the rout was on. Edgar Dela Sancha went on the attack less than 10 minutes later from the left side, and beat the keeper near post with a nice strike.

The Falcons kept flying with opportunity after opportunity. In the closing minutes of the first half, sophomore Chase Melton got the ball from 30 yards out and knocked it in. Then, in the opening 1:15 of the second half, it was Melton again, but this time, the goal was even more impressive than his first. Melton was about 35 yards out and he nailed it in the upper 90 to go up 4-0. By the time North Surry responded, it was far too late. Melton looked confident on the field Wednesday, and it’s a testament to the seniors who helped support him.

“At first it got really nerve-racking when you came out onto the field, but after a few times, you got used to it and started playing the faster paced game,” Melton said. “Edgar (Dela Sancha), Schuyler (Eldridge), Ryan (Miller), all are those who push you to make you faster.”

Seniors came up big in the game, accounting for four of the seven Falcons goals. Dela Sancha, Miller, Brad Clark and Winston Fleming each tacked on a goal.

“What I like out of the seniors is, they haven’t played a bunch on the field this season, but when they come out on the field, they always come out confident and strong for the team,” Forbush senior captain Ryan Miller said.

The win moved Forbush into a two-way tie for first in the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference with Surry Central. Forbush then went on to host senior night against South Stokes Thursday. At press time, those results were not posted.
