Starmount and East Wilkes are set to square off in their final regular season match Wednesday night, with playoff seedlings likely on the line.
The Lady Cardinals (11-8, 9-4 MVAC) and Starmount (12-10, 9-4 MVAC) are both tied for second in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference, and while it seems likely they’ll both make the playoffs, whoever wins locks themselves in, and with it, will have a better seeding for the 1A tournament. Last time out, the two teams went for five sets, with winning 3-2.
“We understand that Starmount has a big name in volleyball, but we also know with the team we have they are very beatable,” East Wilkes senior Caitlyn Macemore said. “We have six seniors and a win on Starmount is what we have been craving since freshman year.”
Win and in should be the mentality for both teams, and for Starmount, Ashley Johnson, Starmount’s lone senior, would certainly like to go out on her senior night with a bang, and leave the court knowing there are more games to be played.
“It’s going to be emotionally tough because it is senior night, but we just have to realize the importance of it,” Johnson said. “We’ve gradually been getting better and I think when we played at East we started out slow, so we have to start out fast and stay strong through the match.”
Lastly, there’s also the likelihood that both teams could make the playoffs based on their record alone. It’s promising to be a battle point-for-point, which hopefully will fill the seats.
