RONDA — After failing to hold on to a win in the second set, Elkin’s volleyball team reassessed the situation in the third and fourth sets to earn a 3-1 win over East Wilkes on Tuesday night.

Elkin started off the first set with three kills in a row from Kylie Thomas to make the score 4-1. Thomas’ kills were followed by an ace from Catie Beth Brown who gave the Elks a 5-1 lead. Elkin then went on to take their biggest lead of the set with a 10-5 lead over the Cardinals. East Wilkes wasn’t giving up, as Leah Byrd served four aces in a row to get the Cardinals back in the set and cut Elkin’s lead to one point. While the first set kept going back-and-forth, Elkin finally prevailed when Laken Brown killed the ball to give the Elks a 25-23 win.

During the second set, the Elks were looking to keep their winning momentum going but East Wilkes had other ideas. With an early 6-1 lead courtesy of Lauren Johnson, the Cardinals maintained their momentum until the 12th point when Elkin’s Thomas found two kills to tie the game 12-12. The second set saw seven ties and lead changes until East Wilkes took control of the game with Johnson serving again for the Cardinals. Elkin’s defense was unable to handle Johnson’s serves, and the Cardinals took a 25-20 win in the second set.

During the final two sets, Elkin’s Kylie Thomas, Laken Brown and Cameron Beals earn several kills while Thomas, Mackenzie Tilley, Corrin Shores and Reagan Parks all had aces. For East Wilkes, it battled every step of the way with the help of Alexis Pardue, who had five kills and two aces, and Leah Byrd, who had three kills and three aces.

While both teams battled it out, Elkin earned the win with a 25-21 win in the third set and a 25-17 win in the fourth set to take home a 3-1 conference win over East Wilkes.

Elkin moves to 4-7 overall and 4-2 in the MVAC, its next game is Sept. 22 against North Wilkes (11-3, 6-0). Results were not available by press deadline.

East Wilkes moves to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the MVAC, it will travel to Starmount (4-9, 3-3) on Thursday night. Results were not available by press deadline.
