The Elkin Middle/High School fencing team has been competing for the past 13 years guided by Coach Walter Triplette. The team has seen nine State Championships so far, with the last being earned by EHS senior Drake Bogart on Feb. 11.
Triplette’s career has taken some turns, but he eventually became Elkin’s fencing coach. Triplette explained, “I was the coach at Duke University, Mount Airy High School, Salem Academy; then I landed here.”
Triplette has high expectations for his athletes, and a great deal of work is required from those teens hoping to become champions.
Assistant Coach Brian Rector explained, “Walter is a phenomenal mentor, and the work these kids are putting off will be [reflected in] the state tournament.”
Fencing is not only a fun team sport, but also provides participants with future opportunities for scholarships and fencing at the college level.
According to Triplette, “There have been nine fencers from Elkin to go on to college varsity level, three of which became team captains. The seniors this year could do the same with a little push.”
Any Elkin Middle or Elkin High School students who may be interested in fencing should contact April Swarey at Elkin High School, 336-835-3858, in order to receive more information.
Drake Bogart, Avery Atwood and Tristin Shears are English students at Elkin High School.
