DOBSON — The Lady Eagles welcome a new coach this season.
Holly Porter takes over the team from Dennis Miller after returning to North Carolina this year.
A Wilkes Central graduate, Porter coached boys and girls tennis at West Wilkes back in the 1990s, going against Mount Airy legend James Hayes a few times.
She has spent the past six years in Phoenix, and now starts at Central, teaching biology.
Porter, who played at Mars Hill College, got an exhibition win Thursday against East Wilkes, 5-4.
This is “a strong group of talented girls,” Porter said after seeing the team in action.
The Lady Eagles lost perennial conference tournament finalist Marlee Wilmoth to graduation. However, the team does return three starters and a talented sophomore.
The top three spots for the scrimmage were Sommer Chilton, Mallory Wilmoth and Hope Hinson, Porter said.
Sarah Wyble is a sophomore who is going to surprise a lot of people at the fourth spot, the coach believed.
Several players in the mix for the final two spots.
The rest of the roster is Anna Senter, Karlie White, Hannah Pardue, Mattie Grace Snow, Sarah Marion, Haily Robertson, Brenda Ordonez and Brennan Day.
This group has a good mixture of upperclassmen at the top and young potential at the bottom, the coach believed.
The Eagles jump right into some rivalry matches with East Surry on Monday and Mount Airy on Wednesday.
