DOBSON — The Surry Central soccer team opened the 2016 season in style.

The Golden Eagles trounced Elkin 9-0 on Monday with a dazzling offensive display. Eight different names got on the score sheet for Surry Central.

“The best part about this game was seeing all of our players get extended time out on the field,” Surry Central Coach Blake Roth said. “Our starters and our bench players showed us something that was encouraging and can help us down the road.”

Miguel Tello got the scoring started for Surry Central less than five minutes into the match when he dribbled past two Elkin defenders and launched a left-footed strike into the back of the net.

Ten minutes later, Surry Central doubled its advantage off a corner kick. Javier Villacana sent in a low cross with his left foot and into the run of freshman Nolan McMillen, who tucked it away for his first career varsity goal. McMillen was a surprise start due to some injuries on the Eagles’ back-line, but he scored two goals and looked comfortable at the high school level.

“We’re very excited about all three of our freshmen,” Roth said. “We needed a left-foot in our defense, and Nolan did a tremendous job stepping up today.”

The goals started pouring in from there for Surry Central. Julio Sanchez, Rodrigo Landaverde, Arturo Lopez and Hernan Garcia each scored before halftime to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Luis Padilla and Brandon Martinez got their names on the score sheet, along with McMillen securing his second goal of the evening.

Roth called it a terrific start for his team, but he knows a significant challenge awaits his team on Thursday when the Eagles travel to face 3A powerhouse South Iredell.
