BOONVILLE — The Starmount Lady Rams continued their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon when the Rams defeated the Lady Sauras of South Stokes by a score of 2-1.

All the scoring came in the first half as the Lady Rams struck first with a goal from Maggie Freed off the assist of Molly Maske for a quick 1-0 lead at the 31:25 mark of the first half. The Rams gave up the tying goal with 16:54 when Madison Green scored an unassisted goal to make it 1-1.

The Rams would score the eventual game winner with 4:19 remaining in the first half as Maggie Freed assisted Molly Maske for the go-ahead goal for the Rams. The first half ended with the Rams ahead 2-1.

The second half was attack and counter-attack for both teams. The Rams out-shot the Lady Sauras on goal by a count of 17 to 13. Courtney Byrd and the Starmount defense had another good game as Byrd recorded 12 saves on 13 shots. Her counterpart from South Stokes recorded 11 saves on the night.

“Izzy Najera saved us a few times tonight and Kenia Luna stepped in front of a sure South Stokes goal and cleared it out of harms way,” said Starmount Coach Dale Draughn. “We are having a few growing pains and at times we are working too hard in games and too hard on defense. It was ugly, but we got the win in the end.”

The win improves the Rams’ overall record to 2-0-1 and South Stokes falls to 2-1 on the season. The Rams return to action on Friday when they host West Stokes for a non-conference clash.

“We are going to work hard on things that need to be corrected and work on our finishing the next two days in practice in preparation for West who are always tough each year,” said Draughn.
