Rams and Bears end in tie

BOONVILLE — The Lady Bears of Mount Airy and the Lady Rams of Starmount battled to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday night. In a game that went from attacks to counter-attacks the entire night, neither team could find the back of the net. Both teams had several point-blank shots and both keepers for each team came up big.

The Bears would take advantage of a Rams foul just outside the box with four minutes remaining in the first half, as Baylee Greenwood scored from a free kick between the crossbar and the hands of Rams keeper Courtney Byrd. The half would end with the Rams trailing 0-1.

It was like a tale of two halves as the Lady Rams became the aggressors and took shot after shot and the Bears keeper came up big, time and time again. The Rams finally broke through and scored the game tying goal with 9:54 remaining when Molly Maske assisted her sister Claire Maske for the tying goal. With 40 seconds remaining in the game, the Bears had a great opportunity to steal the win but the Rams wall held strong and cleared the ball out to preserve the 1-1 tie.

The Lady Rams outshot the Lady Bears by a count of 21 to 19 on goal. Both keepers recorded 18 saves on the night. The Lady Rams will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Highland Tech for a 5 p.m. non-conference encounter. Starmount is looking to get their first win of the 2017 season.
