For 23 years, The Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce has held its annual golf tournament around the Yadkin Valley area. Last week, more than 56 golfers of all ages came out to test their golf skills at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin. The tournament was a networking event and a way for various members of the community to get to know their chamber members and to play a fun round of golf.
With the temperature forecasted in the high 90s and storms brewing in the west, it didn’t stop the participants from coming out and enjoying some time on the links. Thirteen teams made their way through the course to have a bit of fun while also supporting the YVCC. The event was a break even event, with no money being raised but the winners of the tournament each received a trophy.
“I think the tournament is a great way for people to come together,” said YVCC President Myra Cook. “It gives the members and non-members a chance to talk and find out what each other’s business is and see how they can help each other.”
The Championship Flight championship went to the winning team of Steve Owings, James Owings, Matt Matthews and Jay Callahan. They shot a 60 on the 72-par course. The First Flight championship was awarded to the team of Van Shore, Jack Crissman, Fleming Crissman and Rick Foster as they shot a 59 for the day. Don Trippel, Lee Powe, Warren Bates and Rick Thompson made up the Second Flight championship team with a score of 59.
Although the tournament’s main function was to bring people together to have fun, the tournament has a bigger cause as the porceeds benefit the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce by funding local events in the Yadkin Valley area. The tournament had several sponsors that they would like to thank for their contributions; Yadkin Bank, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, Bayada, G&B Energy, Surry Telephone, CMS Insurance, Duke Energy, Mountain Valley Hospice, Mazzini’s, Surrey Bank, Federal Finance, Basin Creek Realty, State Farm Insurance, Surry Yadkin EMC, Granco, Century 21, Life Store, Yadtel, Gentry Funeral Home, Stanley Heating, Workforce Unlimited, Sedgewick Homes, and Weyerhaeuser. Other annual sponsors are RH Barringer, Phillip Van Heusen, and Bleu Water.
