DOBSON — The Surry Community College Foundation celebrated the 20th anniversary of its annual golf tournament on May 19. The event, which has raised more than $920,000 in its 20 years, provides scholarships and general support for SCC students.
Supporters numbering 220 registered for the game of golf, which in this case brings renewed friendships, business networking, tall tales and good food. Light rain greeted the morning round at Cross Creek Country Club but soon cleared for a full day of fun. Community volunteers, student athletes, and Surry employees managed the tournament creating a great event which included breakfast, a lunchtime spread complete with balloons and 20th anniversary cupcakes, and a BBQ dinner with a beautifully decorated anniversary cake.
Special guests included John Alvarez Sr. and his son John Alvarez Jr. who made the trip from Ocala, Florida, to honor the memory of their dear friend Bobby Harold. Harold served as the co-chairman of the event until his death in August of 2013. Jim Woltz, Mount Airy native and son of John and Pat Woltz, traveled from Roanoke, Virginia, and connected with friends Gene Rees and Richard Patterson. Woltz is an annual Eagle sponsor of the event honoring the memory of his mother, Pat Gwyn Woltz, who was a patron of Surry students and a golf tournament volunteer. Former college presidents Dr. Swanson Richards and Dr. Frank Sells, who hosted his Milligan College friends, enjoyed being a part of this most important fundraiser for the College.
A highlight of the day was having Justin Young, member of the World Long Drive Championship tour and former SCC golf team member, on hand. Young, SCC golf team members and Golf Coach Tom Pendergraft manned a Driving for Dollars station on the first hole.
Instead of prizes, student scholarships are awarded for the 2016-2017 school year in the name of the winning teams. Golf winners for the morning flights were: Pebble Beach Flight – first place, Faw, Folger, Johnson Team: Clark Goings, Larry Wood, Kevin Atkins, and Podge Atkins; second place, Lincoln Securities Team: Chris Porter, Don Larue, Tony Hall, and Jim Murname; St. Andrews Flight – first place, Golding Transport Team: Ellery Golding, Butch Matthews, Roger Jackson, and Eric Crisp; second place, Carolina Mutual Insurance Team: Tyler Adamson, Chris Meinberg, Patrick Turlington, and Richard Lee; and Cross Creek Flight – first place, Unifi Team: Darrel Hobson, Kevin Reece, Dennis Joyner, and Dwayne Bobbitt; second place, MHC Kenworth Team: Logan Yeager, Zack Beal, Josh Sauls, and Ryan Andrews.
Golf winners for the afternoon flights were: Pebble Beach Flight – first place, Carport Central Team: Jody Casstevens, Eddie Brown, Alyssa Cox, and Jim Walsher; second place, Omega Construction Team: Chad Motsinger, Wayne Motsinger, Dustin Hunter, Darrell Barnes; St. Andrews Flight – first place, W.R. Vernon Produce Team: Bill Doss, Gary Lyons, Nick Lyons, and Chad Kiger; second place, Hampton Inn Team: Dale Fowler, Jimmy Inman, Ronnie Joyce, and Brad Dorsett; and Cross Creek Flight – first place, Garanco Team: Nick Stanley, Justin Smith, Bob Kaszowski, and Keith Stanley; second place, Triple C Transportation Team: Dennis Cook, Jason Mills, Barry Cook, and Robert Burleson.
Closest to the Pin winners were: Morning Round – Adam Hillard, Monty Forrest, Lee Ives and Todd Tucker and Afternoon Round – Cameron Lineback on holes 2,7, and 10 and Jordan Williams. Ladies Most Accurate Drives went to Alyssa Cox and Patty Carpenter; Men’s Most Accurate Drives went to Eddie Brown and Colt Simmons.
Raffle prize winners were: Aaron Routh, Bill Doss, Ralph Hardy, Paige Smith, Ellery Golding, Jim Yeager, Joy Mitchell, and John Thompson.
The Foundation sponsored a Farm to Table dinner in celebration of the 20th Anniversary at Cross Creek Country Club on the evening prior to the tournament. Attendees enjoyed a four course meal prepared by chefs, Chuck Gardner and David Swing, featuring locally sourced foods including Floral Ridge, Fair Share and Harmony Ridge farms. The meal was complimented with specialties from Mayberry Spirits, Surry Cellars and Granny Ruth’s Bakery. Dennis Tolbert, well-known guitarist, entertained for the evening. Volunteers Sharon Reid, Peggy Rees and Ginny Adams ensured a beautiful background for the meal with green checked tablecloths, flowers, and unique vegetable displays.
