BOONVILLE — When Starmount and Elkin baseball meet during the season, the game is guaranteed to bring everything that one would expect from rival teams. When these two teams meet during the conference tournament, the rivalry is that much bigger.
On Wednesday night, the Rams and the Elks met in the MVAC tournament semifinals in Boonville. Starmount was coming off of a few minutes of rest after they finished their Monday night rain-out game just before the start of the game on Wednesday. Elkin was coming off of a day’s rest, as they were the only team to complete their game on Monday night. Both teams were looking to advance to the MVAC championship game, but only one was able to do so. Starmount found the hits and the runs they needed, and came away with a 9-3 win over Elkin.
The Rams got off to a great start in the bottom of the second as they scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Rams scored two more runs to make the score 5-0 before Elkin could get a run on the board.
In the top of the fourth, Elkin made the most of its chances to score three runs. Cory Wiles started off the inning by earning a stand-up double with a hit to left field. Jacob Burchette earned a single for the Elks that moved Wiles to third. As Will Altemueller stepped up to the plate for the Elks, Wiles saw his chance to give the Elks a run, as he stole home after a wild pitch from the Rams. With one out, Eli Brown earned double with a hit to right field that brought Burchette across the plate. Elkin wasn’t done with its scoring as Jackson Carter earned a hit that got past the shortstop to bring another run across the plate.
After three and a half innings, Elkin put three runs on the board to make the score 5-3. Starmount didn’t let the three Elkin runs faze them, as the Rams scored one run in the bottom of the fourth (Houston Nicks), two runs in the bottom of the fifth (Brock Mullins and Curtis Craft), and one run in the bottom of the sixth (Peyton Mullins).
The Rams went on to beat the Elks, 9-3 to earn a spot in the MVAC Championship game.
The Rams will face Wilkes Central on Friday night in the MVAC tournament championship.
