As the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference baseball tournament was getting underway, the MVAC softball tournament also was kicking things off on Monday night. Number three seed, Elkin Lady Elks were host to the six seed North Wilkes Vikings on a stormy afternoon. The Elks came away with a 6-3 victory after a heavy downpour came through the area in the first inning and set the tone for the rest of the game.
In the bottom of the first inning, Elkin got things started as Kirstan Beaver found a gaping hole in right center field that earned her a double. Nicole Collins stepped up to the plate and laid down a perfect bunt that moved Beaver to third, unfortunately for Collins she couldn’t make it to first before the North Wilkes catcher threw her out. Next up for the Elks, Reagan Parks found herself putting down the perfect bunt to score Beaver and give the Elks a 1-0 lead. The bunts kept coming for Elkin as Bayle Wood put another down to earn a single and move Parks to second. Casey Matthews kept the momentum going for Elkin as she earned an RBI to bring Parks across the plate and give the Elks a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Mackenzie Tilley stepped up to the plate and crushed the ball over the left center field fence to earn a solo home-run. The rest of the inning, the Elks tried to keep the momentum going but they fell short. Ashley Hemric earned a single with a hit to left center, and Chloe Osborne found first base off of a perfectly placed bunt. With Hemric on second and Osborne on first, Beaver stepped up and hit a line drive to second base. North Wilkes’ second baseman caught the ball and had a quick enough reaction to throw out Hemric at second base to turn a double play. The inning ended with the Elks earning one run to take a 3-0 lead.
It wasn’t until the fifth inning that North Wilkes would score a run off of a hit to left field to make the score 3-1. The Elks didn’t let the run faze them as they scored three runs on the bottom of the fifth inning. Collins earned a triple to score Beaver, Parks earned an RBI to score Collins, and Aspen Shaw earned a triple to score Casey Matthews.
In the top of the seventh, North Wilkes was pushing for a comeback. They scored two runs to make the score 6-3, but they were unable to make it past Elkin’s defense. The Elks survived the late seventh inning push by North Wilkes to come away with the 6-3 win. The Elks will move on to round two in the conference tournament to take on Wilkes Central on Wednesday afternoon at East Wilkes.
