SPARTA — The Starmount Lady Rams made short work of the short-handed Lady Trojans in their Mountain Valley 1A/2A conference match in Piney Creek. The Lady Rams ended the game at halftime by the mercy rule score of 9-0.
Rams player Diana Flores got things started quickly, scoring with 39:18 gone in the first half off the assist of Emily Mendenhall. Mendenhall then scored a goal of her own off the assist of Izzy Najera with 38:14 to go in the first half. Courtney Byrd would score two goals, while freshmen Stephanie Brown scored her first goal of the season off the assist of Izzy Najera. Diana Flores assisted one of Byrd’s goal while the other goal was unassisted. Sierra Casstevens scored an unassisted goal with 28:18 left in the first half.
The Rams made ample substitutions and had several shots on goal, but they were directly at the Alleghany keeper or missed. The Rams didn’t let this stop them as Diana Flores scored two goal in less than four minutes and Amber Hurst scored the final goal of the half for the 9-0 win for the Rams.
“Everyone saw ample playing time in different positions and scored a few goals as well. Alleghany’s coach is working with the girls and teaching them correctly, it is just going to take some time to build a program,” said Starmount Coach Dale Draughn. “What he was doing and telling them to do was correct. I have been on the either side of those type of losses and they are discouraging, but you also have to put things in perspective as well.”
The win improves the Lady Rams’ overall record to 8-6 and their conference record to 4-4. They return to action on Wednesday when the same Lady Trojans travel to Boonville for a 5:15 p.m. match-up.
