The Lady Elks softball team earned its fifth conference win on Tuesday night with a win over Ashe County.

Ashe jumped on top in the first inning with a home run by its first batter. The home run gave Ashe a pep in its step, and put the game into perspective for the Elks. Before the end of the top of the first, the Huskies earned another run to make the score 2-0.

Elkin got its chance to even the score in the bottom of the first as Kirstan Beaver got things started for the Elks. Beaver earned a double with a hit to left field then stole third. Reagan Parks was the second batter up for the Elks and found her way to first after she earned a walk. With the tying run on first, Bayle Wood stepped up and smashed the ball into right center field and brought in Beaver and Parks to tie the game 2-2.

In the top of the the second inning, the Huskies were back at it again as they scored two more runs to make the score 4-2. Elkin inched closer to tying the score in the bottom of the second, but they were only able to score one run to make the score 4-3. It didn’t take long for the Elks to get the tying run. As they took to the plate in the bottom of the third, Aspen Shaw made a great hit up the middle of the field to earn a single. Mackenzie Tilley earned a walk to put Shaw within scoring position with Beaver up to bat. Beaver hit the ball to center field to bring Shaw across the plate and level the score 4-4.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nicole Collins found her way across the plate to give the Elks their first lead of the night. From there, the Elks took control of the game and never looked back. The bottom of the sixth inning, the Elks scored five runs to give them a 9-4 lead. Casey Matthews, Nicole Collins, Aspen Shaw, and Mackenzie Tilley all crossed the plate for the Elks in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh inning, the Huskies were able to score one run to make the final score 9-5 but it was too little too late, and the Elks came away with the win.

With the win, the Elks move to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the MVAC conference.
