BOONVILLE — Conference rivals Elkin and Starmount were in action on Friday night in Boonville. The crowd was hyped as each team battled its way through seven innings before Elkin came away with the 7-6 win.

The first inning, Elkin got the lead early as it scored two runs, but Starmount didn’t let it keep the lead long. During the bottom of the first, Patrick Usher smashed the ball to right field to earn a triple and bring one Starmount player across home plate. Henry Stone stepped up to the box and kept the hits going by earning a double and tying the game 2-2.

The battle kept going for both teams in each of their respective innings. In the top of the third, Matt Martir-Tullock drove the ball over the Rams’ center fielder to earn a double. His hit brought Jackson Carter home and gave Elkin the lead 3-2 in the top of the second. Starmount came up short in the second, but it found its groove again in the third.

Elkin scored a run in the top of the third when Will Altemueller earned a single and brought Cory Wiles across the plate. With the score 4-2 in Elkin’s favor, Starmount was determined to get back the lead and they came out swinging. With Andrew Smythers on third and a runner on second, Dalton Oliver found himself at the plate with two outs and the tying run on second. His bat found the perfect position on the ball as he found left field to earn a single and bring in the tying runs for Starmount.

With the score 4-4, the Rams didn’t let up their pressure on the Elks. Brock Mullins kept the hits going with a double that brought in Oliver to make the score 5-4. Before the inning was over, Curtis Craft found himself a double to bring in Mullins. The Rams had a big third inning and battled back to earn a 6-4 lead.

The Elks earned another run in the top of the fourth to bring the score to 6-5. In the top of the fifth, the Elks started to make their comeback for the night. With two outs on the board and the tying run on second, Hayden Brooks found center field for a double and brought Carter home to tie the game 6-6. With a runner on first and second Eli Brown found himself at the plate facing Starmount’s relief pitcher Oliver. Brown didn’t let the change get to him as he earned a single to center and brought Brooks across the plate to give the Elks a 7-6 lead.

As the game was coming to a close, Starmount tried to battle back to get the runs they needed but they came up short. With a 7-6 lead, the Elks earned the win against their conference rivals.

With the win, Elkin goes to 6-2 overall record and 2-1 in the conference. Its next game is Tuesday against Wilkes Central.

Starmount falls to a 2-5 overall record and 1-1 in the conference. Its next game is Monday against South Stokes.
