WILMINGTON - Former East Wilkes baseball standout Robbie Monday is returning to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach.

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington and head baseball coach Mark Scalf announced last week that Monday has been added to the Seahawks coaching staff for the 2012-13 campaign.

“I’m eager to get started,” Monday said to UNCW Sports Information. “The chance to return to UNCW and join a staff that has been very successful is exciting for me. I’m thankful that Coach Scalf and Coach Hood have given me this opportunity. I look forward to the challenges ahead as we look to win the CAA and return to the NCAA tournament.”

Monday, one of the most prolific hitters in program history, returns to Wilmington after one season as the hitting coach at Barton College in Wilson.

After graduating from East Wilkes in 2005, Monday briefly played for Western Carolina before transferring to Surry Community College. The slugger spent two seasons in Dobson before transferring once again to UNCW where he was a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Conference performer.

In his only two years as a Seahawk, Monday cranked 32 home runs - including 20 in 2010 - en route to a team-MVP trophy and an all-state nod his senior year. The Elkin native ranks fourth on the all-time homerun charts, while his .620 slugging percentage in 2010 ranks first in the program annals.

Following his playing career, injuries forced Monday to find another career in the game. He was offered at hitting coach position at Barton College under former Wilmington coach Josh Simmons.

Under his tutelage, Barton hit .285 as a team, while belting 30 homers and 107 doubles. The Bulldogs finished the year with a 17-31 mark.

The Seahawks are coming off a 39-23 season that included a 24-6 conference record. Wilmington captured the CAA title with a thrilling 10-8 victory in the conference tournament finals to advance into the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008 and fifth time in program history.

UNCW went 1-2 in the NCAA Raleigh Regional - that included a 13-4 win over Sacred Heart - before falling in their final game to NC State, 17-5.
