BOONVILLE - Mountain Valley Conference play officially kicks off tonight in Week Three of the high school football season.
Four-time defending conference champion Starmount opens its conference slate with Yadkin County rival Forbush coming to town in the annual Unifi Bowl.
The Rams sit at 2-0 on the year after knocking off East Surry last week in an overtime thriller 14-7. The Falcons are searching for their first win of the season after nearly upsetting reigning 2AA state champ West Stokes last week in their home opener.
Starmount has owned the Unifi Bowl in recent memory, winning five-straight matchups, including a 44-5 dismantling last season.
In Elkin, the Buckin’ Elks host neighbor East Wilkes in their home opener tonight.
The Elks let last week’s game with North Surry slip away after holding a 14-7 advantage in the second quarter before falling 41-21, dropping their record to 1-1 on the year. East is still looking for the first ‘W’ of the JK Adkins’ era after falling late to Surry Central last week, 27-12.
The Cardinals breezed to a 27-7 victory in last year’s matchup, their first win in the series since 2000.
Four other MVAC squads kick off their conference schedule Friday around the Yadkin Valley as Alleghany travels to North Wilkes, while Wilkes Central and West Wilkes square off in Millers Creek. Ashe County battles North Surry in a non-conference tilt.
All games begin at 7:30 p.m.
