RONDA - East Wilkes took control over the top spot in the Mountain Valley Conference tennis standings with a dominating 8-1 win over Starmount last Thursday afternoon.
Kelly Johnson, Hannah Brown, Molly Callaway, Christy Carter and Marigail Mahaffey all topped their opponents in singles play, while all three double pairs breezed to the win.
Starmount senior Ashley Griffin remains undefeated on the year with a 4-6, 6-2 (10-4) victory over ShaNisha White for the Lady Rams’ only win.
East improved to 5-1 on the season, including a 5-0 mark in the MVAC, a half-game ahead of second-place Wilkes Central at 5-1 in conference play. The Lady Rams sit in third place at 4-2 with losses to the top two teams.
In Elkin, the Lady Elks’ continue struggle in their rebuilding season, falling 7-2 Monday to Surry Central in a non-conference match.
Elise Corrigan and Julie Neumark picked up Elkin’s two wins on the afternoon.
The Lady Elks, who have lost three-straight matches, look to pick up their second conference win when they travel to Starmount Thursday.
