Tap your toes for the Elkin Valley Trails.
The second annual Boots and Bridges Boogie will be Tuesday night at the Reeves in the Raw to raise money for a suspension bridge that will go across the Elkin Creek.
“There will be a suspension bridge approximately a quarter mile from the Elkin Municipal Park track,” said Denise Lyons of the Elkin Valley Trails Association (EVTA) steering committee. “Right now the trail takes you to the creek and you can’t go any further. Two bridges will be built, and hikers will be able to go up to the town reservoir.”
The band performing at the Boots and Bridges Boogie are New Jersey based Dennis Gruenling and The Jewel Tones. Bill Blackley of the EVTA steering committee met the harmonica player in the band while at harmonica camp.
“I’ve known him for seven years. They are doing their east coast tour now,” Blackley said. “They had such a good time last year, and we didn’t have time to get the word out so we wanted to bring them back.”
Last year the band was a large success and had the audience changing “Move to Elkin,” by the end of the night, Lyons said.
All money raised at the fundraiser will go towards the building to the suspension bridge. Members of the EVTA committee had a construction meeting last Friday to plan the bridge, what equipment will be needed and where an access road will go to allow for the building.
“We are hoping to see tangible progress late this summer and into this fall,” Lyons said.
Unlike some greenways in other towns that take you through neighborhoods and industrial areas, the Elkin trails will be completely in nature, Lyons said.
“Once you get on the trail, you walk by the Elkin Creek almost the whole way,” she said. “It seems like you are in another world and you would never know you’re downtown Elkin. It’s going to be one the prettiest greenway trails.”
Boots and Bridges Boogie will start at 7 p.m. and end at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26 at the Reeves in the Raw on West Main St. The event is admission free and welcomes donations.
Harry’s Restaurant will be selling food, which will go towards EVTA. The Reeves Restoration Board will be selling alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages which will go towards the Reeves.
“We want to encourage to everyone to support the Reeves,” Blackley said. “This event is for anyone who supports the arts, trails and local entertainment.”
