Local photographer and adventure guide Julian Charles will have traveled 200 miles by Saturday - by bicycle - as he reaches his destination in Raleigh.
The trip began on Thursday and will take Charles to the state capital as he participates in three separate climate change convergence events.
The ride is called “Climate Convergence on Raleigh” and starts in Winston-Salem for most riders. Charles started in Elkin. Riders converge in Winston, then Greensboro, and finally in Raleigh for a two-day climate change rally.
He is photographing his ride as well as blogging and posting Facebook messages on the road, via a solar-panel phone charger.
The event is a function of 350 Winston, an environmental group of Winston-Salem residents who are working to curb climate change and global warming. Charles met with riders from all across the state in Winston Thursday at 5 p.m. and began the long road to Raleigh, with a stop along the way in Greensboro on Friday at noon.
Charles is also both a professional photographer and an adventure guide.
A former New Zealander turned “Yank,” he combines the two careers by guiding photography tours to locations like Greenland, New Zealand’s South Island, to Colorado, where clients travel on snowshoe through the wintry snows.
His next trip is slated for May 4-12, when he and clients will travel to the English Lake District, the national park of England. The trip promises “some of the best hiking in the world” and a combination of photography workshops by night and hiking by day.
Charles’ photographs have been sold across the globe since he began photographing professionally in 2005.
“I am a photographer and adventurer,” he said. “I know it’s a good day when I have done a little of both.”
