Ninety-eight students will be starting a new life on Saturday.
Elkin High School will be saying goodbye to a group of graduating seniors who Principal Mark Byrd said are a lot of fun.
“This is a very interesting group,” Byrd said. “The biggest impression they have left with me is that they are fun loving; they like to laugh and make you laugh.”
They’re also intelligent and hard workers, he said. Nearly $400,000 worth of scholarships were given away to the Class of 2012.
“The leadership potential in this class is unbelievable,” Byrd said. “I think there are some students who will come out of nowhere and surprise us all.”
Most of Elkin High School’s students will be staying in state for college, continuing their education at University of North Carolina, Appalachian State University, Eastern Carolina University, North Carolina State University and Surry Community College.
The top 10 percent of the students will be speaking at graduation, these students include:
-Laura Burgess
-Catherine Schumack
-Aidan McRitchie
-Esther Neumark
-Kaylee Brown
-Christopher McIlveen
-Thomas McIlveen
-Cory Eaton
-Emma White
-Mary Tayloe
Along with the speakers, the Elkin High School Chamber Singers will also be performing.
Elkin High School graduation will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, at Grissom Stadium.
“I see this class doing big things in the future,” Byrd said. “There not only is potential in the top percentage of the class, but all the way through.”
