Fiddlers take over Crater Park this weekend, as the Elkin Valley Fiddlers present their inaugural event starting at 11 a.m.

The Elkin Valley Fiddlers By The River will be holding its inaugural event this Saturday.

“I have been to bluegrass festivals and am aware of the fun people have, the economic benefits to our local economy from people visiting, and as we grow we feel this event will add to the Elkin brand,” said lead organizer Barry Carlton.

“We all needed about $3 thousand to put this venue on. We put up most of our own money to help fund this venue, but we are also grateful for our sponsors too,” continued Carlton.

The fiddle steering committee consists of Carlton, Caroline and David Blackmon, Bill Blackley, Erik Dahlager, Cory Myers, Charlotte Reynolds, Nancy Gould, Leighanne Wright, and Cynthia Grant as the executive director.

Music will begin at 11 a.m. The venue is scheduled to take place in Crater Park off Standard Street in Elkin and continue throughout the afternoon.

The event is open to the public and free. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for their convenience. For inclement weather, fiddle officials say they will shift inside The Liberty located at 222 E. Main St.

Entertainment:

11 a.m. - Elkin Creek Boys Bluegrass Band

12 noon - Joe Thrift and the Country Store

1 p.m. - Howell Osborne Band

2 p.m. - Zephyr Lightning Bolts

3 p.m. - The Fiddler’s Wife

4 p.m. - Open mic; report to information desk for sign up

5 p.m. - Beyond the Blue

A contra/square dance will be held at The Liberty. Lessons for beginners will be held at 6:30 p.m. The dance will run from 7-10:30 p.m. The dance will feature the music of The Fiddler’s Wife with David Blackmon and Robert Kogut on fiddles, Caroline Blackmon on guitar and Roberta Kogut calling. The group is asking for a $5 donation at the door to help cover the cost for this family-friendly venue.

“You need clean soft sole shoes, but everyone can come, learn, watch, or participate. It’s a great time,” said Carlton.

“Contra dancing is fun and easy to learn,” Roberta Kogut said. “If you can walk, you can contra dance. It’s roots are the same as square dancing, originating in Europe and coming over with our founding fathers (and mothers).”

The Elkin Valley Fiddlers is an associate member of the Foothills Arts Council.

“This new musical endeavor builds upon the arts council’s efforts to enrich the lives of Yadkin Valley residents and visitors,” Eris Ball, president of the Foothills Arts Council board, said on its website. “We envision the Elkin Valley Fiddlers By the River event will grow and gain popularity, making Elkin an even more artful destination with music to support the existing wine industry and trail system.”

“We are very grateful for their help,” said Carlton.
