Time Sawyer Band’s lead singer, Sam Tayloe, is using his passion for music to better his hometown.
The Elkin native discovered his flare for music around the time he graduated from Elkin High School in 2008. Now, four years later, he is heading up Elkin’s second-annual Reevestock music festival, something he hopes will have lasting effects on Elkin.
Tayloe and his fellow band members, Houston Norris, Kurt Layell and Clay Stirewalt, orchestrated the festival to raise funds for the Reeves Theater Restoration Project. The Reeves is one step closer to being able to one day reopen.
With Reevestock less than a week away, the festival is what’s on the forefront of Tayloe’s mind at the time, but it isn’t the only way he has used his music to better this community.
Time Sawyer Band held its first CD release at Elkin High School in 2011, with all of the proceeds of the event going to the high school, Tayloe and Norris’ alma mater.
“Houston and I spent quite a bit of time there; there’s no reason not to give back. Our main thing as a band is if we can benefit someone or something else while we’re still getting a benefit, that’s perfect. I know a lot of people came because they knew we were putting it on for the high school, and hopefully once they heard our music, they liked it,” Tayloe said.
The next charitable event Time Sawyer will be gearing up for after Reevestock will be Whiskers and Wine, to benefit Yadkin County Animal Shelter.
This event, Aug. 31 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Allison Oaks Vineyards in Yadkinville, is also close to Tayloe’s heart, as he is a self-proclaimed animal lover. Tickets are $30 and will benefit the animal shelter.
As Tayloe nears his December graduation date from UNC-Charlotte with a degree in history, he hopes his future holds a lasting musical career.
“Teaching is a possibility, but I want to see how the music thing plays out before I see what my next option would be,” Tayloe said. “Besides music, I’m trying not to have too much of a plan right now. Music is my top goal.”
