The Yadkin Valley Sewer Authority will begin its Southwest Elkin Rehab Project on Monday, April 29.
For the next 10 to 12 weeks, YVSA staff and contractors KRG Utilities will be conducting TV inspections and cleaning of the waste water sewer system in the Southwest Elkin area.
According to the YVSA, more than 10 percent of sewer lines are cleaned annually, per regulation. By continually maintaining and repairing the public sewer system to keep it in good working condition, the authority says it reduces the potential for backups.
“We have 85 miles of sewer. That’s over 8.5 miles of preventative cleaning every year,” said Nicole Johnston, executive director of the YVSA.
“The cost of the project is $800,000,” said John Holcolmb, who serves as budget manager for the YVSA. “We’ll be getting a grant from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund for $600,00. We qualify for a state revolving loan the $200,000 balance at 0 percent interest. That’s a tremendous savings when you can get about 75 percent of the cost paid for by grants.”
The TV inspections will be conducted via a camera that runs through the pipes and gives an image for the crew to see above ground. Crews will replace defective piping.
Work is expected to occur Monday through Friday, between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and barring weather problems, should be finished by early July.
According to the YVSA, business and home owners do not need to take any special precautions and there will be no interruption to your water or sewer service.
YVSA officials urge residents to drive with additional caution when the work crew is working in the streets. No roads will be blocked and traffic and emergency vehicles will always have a clear path through.
Two months ago, a Jonesville resident saw what can happen when sewer lines back up. The street sewer drainage pipe became clogged by roots from trees and grease from frying pans, according to the YVSA.
The homeowner was evacuated, and the bill was covered insurance through the League of Municipalities.
