The unsung heroes of cancer, local caretakers take an honorary lap as the 2013 relay begins.

Relay for Life of Surry Foothills held its annual relay walk at Elkin High School’s football stadium Friday.
The sky was cloudy and the wind began blowing hard prior to the 6 p.m. kickoff, but the event was undeterred.
Kids played on inflatables at the northern end of the field while other children played soccer or threw ball. Tents with vendors lined the track around the field. People were able to buy food or get their faces painted under the scoreboard.
Surry Foothill’s Angie Wagoner and Amy Cothren made the opening announcements following the invocation and national anthem.
Survivors lined up for the ceremonial Survivors’ Lap to start the event. Survivors in the front carried a banner that read: “survivors celebrating life.”
While not as many participated, the crowd gave the caretakers of those with cancer their own ceremonial Caretakers’ Walk.
Survivors of cancer wore purple shirts, committee members wore orange, team captains wore green, and relayers wore white.
Music was played on the loudspeakers, in addition to local musician Landon Parker performing.
Luminarias were lit and lined along the inside lane of the track. Several more luminarias were arranged in the visitor-side bleachers into the word “HOPE,” under a banner that read “There is no finish line…until we find a cure.”
Cothren said the donation goal was $50,000. At the beginning of the relay the committee had received approximately$30,000.
Donations do not end with the walk however. Cothren said those who want to donate post-relay can contact the organization at angie.wagoner@cancer.org to donate until August 30.
