BURLINGTON - Perfection.
The Buckin’ Elks put the finishing touches on a perfect season Saturday morning at the 1A North Carolina High School Athletic Association Tennis Dual Team State Championships in Burlington.
Elkin knocked off North Carolina School of Science and Math in convincing fashion, 5-1 to capture the state title and cap a unbeaten 18-0 campaign.
Behind doubles champions Tyler Macy and Ryan Schell, the Elks won five of the six singles matches to bring home the crown before playing doubles.
In his final high school match, Macy dominated at No. 1, cruising to a straight-set sweep 6-0, 6-0. Schell followed suit with a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2.
David Bullin then battled to a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 to give the Elks a 3-0 advantage on the first court.
On the second court, Ashton Gant dropped a tough match at No. 4, as Science and Math showed some signs of life.
But Chad Vestal and Jacob Lyon knocked off their opponents to give Elkin its first tennis state title since 2004 in dominating fashion.
The Elks are now a perfect 8-0 in championship matches in program history.
