Area swimmers capture 28 medals at State Games

WINSTON-SALEM - Swimmers from the North Piedmont Aquatic Club (PAC) competed in the 25th annual Powerade State Games of North Carolina this past weekend at Bolton Park in Winston-Salem.

In all, members of PAC took home 28 medals including six gold medals. Three former PAC swimmers, Kirstin Gardner, Chelsea Lawson and Kaitlyn Tunstall, tallied an additional 17 medals including five gold medals.

“I was extremely pleased with all of our swimmers at the meet,” PAC head coach Leah Tunstall said. “We had strong performances from each age group.”

In the 9-10 year old boys division, Elkin native Cameron Burleson took home gold in the 50 meter breaststroke, along with a bronze in the 100 meter freestyle.

In the girls 9-10 year olds, Julie Hicks took gold in the 50 meter backstroke and 100 meter backstroke, and also collected a silver medal in 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter freestyle. Hicks added a bronze in 200 meter freestyle. Avery Tucker earned gold in 50 meter breaststroke, 100 meter breaststroke and 50 meter butterfly, while taking the bronze in 50 meter backstroke and 50 meter freestyle.

In the girls 11-12 division, Sydney Beck took home a silver medal in the 50 meter backstroke.

For the girls 13-14 year old division, Ashley Hicks earned a silver in the 100 meter butterfly and bronze in the 200 meter individual medley. Katelyn Southard collected a silver in the 200 meter butterfly and bronze in the 100 meter butterfly.

In the boys 15-16 year old division, Christopher Holshouser took silver in the 50 meter freestyle, while also earning bronze in the 100 meter breaststroke and 100 meter freestyle.

For the 15-16 girls, Katherine Martin took silver in the 200 meter breaststroke and 200 meter butterfly, while collecting bronze in the 100 meter butterfly and 200 meter individual medley. Kayla Simmons took home bronze in the 200 meter breaststroke.

In the girls 17-18 year old division, recent Elkin graduate and Gardner-Webb-bound Sarah Singleton earned silver in the 100 meter butterfly and 400 meter freestyle.

Former PAC and current Campbell University swimmer Kaitlyn Tunstall collected gold in 100 meter backstroke, 200 meter backstroke, 100 meter butterfly, 200 meter freestyle and 400 meter freestyle, while earning silver in the 50 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle and 200 meter individual medley.

Campbell teammate Chelsea Lawson earned silver in the 100 meter backstroke, 200 meter backstroke, 100 meter butterfly, 200 meter freestyle and 400 meter freestyle, while collecting bronze in the 100 meter freestyle and 200 meter individual medley.

Kirstin Gardner also earned a bronze medal in the 100 meter backstroke and 200 meter freestyle.
