Working with Time Warner Cable for 19 years, Karen Gregory has seen the rapid changes with technology first hand.
Since started in 1993, Gregory first started working for Tri-County Cable, Intermedia, Adelphia and then became Time Warner Cable in 2006.
Gregory said that Internet started being sold approximately 12 years ago under Adelphia.
“When I first started, we had to write everything by hand and then would send the orders to another office where it was entered into a computer,” Gregory said. “Things have changed tremendously.”
But along with Internet options, television and phones have changed as well.
“It went from selling basic cable to Internet, digital cable and digital phones. Customers used to get 30 or 40 channels,” Gregory said. “Now, depending on the package, people can get hundreds of channels. I think it’s a good thing. People now have more options.”
Before starting work in 1993, Gregory homeschooled her son, Andrew, after she and her husband moved to North Wilkesboro.
“Homeschooling and attending public school both had their benefits. I think it helped him, and he was still very social because he was involved in sports,” she said. “It started to be a challenge as he got older and the math and science lessons were over my head.”
Gregory stopped homeschooling once it was time for her son to go to high school, starting at East Wilkes High School in the 10th grade.
“He learned a lot through homeschooling,” she said. “When he started school he tested out of a lot of standardized testing, never brought any books home and graduated high school with honors.”
Gregory is originally from the Austin community in Wilkes County. She and her husband of 36 years moved to Thurmond to be closer to their grandchildren and parents.
“My husband gets to babysit our granddaughter every day,” she laughed. “When her father comes to pick her up, she cries because she doesn’t want to leave Papa.”
