From Beetles to Bel Airs, classic cars lined downtown Elkin at Saturday night’s Cruise-In event.
After leaving Elkin in the 1990s, cruising was brought back on the fourth Saturday of the month this summer to help raise money for the Reeves Restoration Project.
The first event brought out hundreds of car enthusiasts who came to both drive and check out classic cars.
“I love it,” said co-chair Vicki Roberts. “The turnout has been awesome.”
Cruising was free for drivers and the money for the Reeves was raised through $20 t-shirts that were for sale at the event.
Dave Brendle and his wife Dianne brought their 1955 Bel Air to the event. Though Brendle was born and raised in Elkin, he did most of his cruising elsewhere.
“I didn’t do a lot of the cruising in Elkin,” he said. “I was too busy cruising in Boonville with Dianne while we were dating.”
Several downtown businesses such as Royalls, Fiddles, Twenty-One and Main and the Yadkin Valley Craft Guild stayed open during the event.
The Reeves in the Raw was also open so that supporters could see the progress the Restoration Board has made.
“The event has been awesome,” said Jody Goodwill, co-chair and designer of the Cruise Downtown Elkin logo. “There were cars going all the way down Standard St. and parked in the back streets. This is three times the amount of people than what we expected.”
The next Cruise Downtown Elkin will be July 27. Cruise-In t-shirts will be available for sale at Yadkin Valley General Store, Plums and Diana’s Book Store.
