Donn Shultz of Roaring Gap wanted to write two books before he turns 60.

With his 60th birthday coming up next week, he is making the finishing touches on his second book, and his first book is on the shelves of Diana’s Bookstore in Elkin.

“I wanted to write two novels so that if I feel short, I would be able to complete at least one novel,” he said. “I’m actually now starting on my third.”

After working for 31 years for IBM, Shultz wanted to find something to fill his time.

“I volunteered, worked on home improvement projects and tutoring,” he said. “Writing was something that fit into my schedule well and I could do it at my own rate. I had a finished product to show after spending all that time writing.”

Shultz’s first novel, “Corrupt Connection” is set in 2025 New York City and is about a corporation teaming with a drug cartel in order to gain technology. “Corrupt Connection” was published in July.

“With my background in technology from working for IBM, I wanted to deal with something that was truly fiction that was far-fetched, but possible enough to be believable,” he said. “It’s futuristic but not science fiction.”

His second book is set in 1960s Illinois, where Shultz grew up.

“I set it during a time that I would’ve been in high school. In the book, teenagers develop paranormal powers and can see into the future,” he said. “It goes back and forth between small town life in Illinois and the future where they are trying to prevent bad things from happening.”

It takes about a year for Shultz to write a novel and for his wife Claudia to help edit them. Claudia was a former newspaper editor in Waco, Texas.

“You have to have a tough outer shell when you are writing,” he said. “The best you can do is please some of the people some of the time. My wife is honest with me about edits and I appreciate that.”

Shultz self-published his book, “Corrupt Connection,” and it is now available on Amazon and Diana’s Bookstore, in order to have a retail store carrying the book.

“I have some older friends who are not as in tune with ordering online,” he said. “So far I’ve sold about 100 books and I’ve had some positive feedback.”
