Family, friends and faculty gathered in Grissom Stadium Saturday morning to celebrate the trials and triumphs of Elkin High School’s Class of 2012.
Principal Mark Byrd said when he thought about 2012’s graduating class, he remembered their smiles and laughs.
“There is not a day that these students didn’t make me smile or laugh,” Byrd said. “But these students also smiled through some of toughest economic times; with fewer resources and higher gas prices.”
At the first outdoor graduation in several years, the Elkin Chamber Singers performed and the top 10 students in the graduating class spoke about lasting friendships, new beginnings and goodbyes.
“We’ve had to push through school and dedicate ourselves to our studies,” said senior Cory Eaton. “We didn’t just watch the world through a school window, but actively participated.”
Most of Elkin High School’s students will be staying in state for college, continuing their education at University of North Carolina, Appalachian State University, Eastern Carolina University, North Carolina State University and Surry Community College.
Nearly $400,000 worth of scholarships were granted to the Class of 2012.
“These students have learned that it success and happiness comes not by what you have, but who you have around you,” Byrd said.
