The accidental Oct. 3 deaths of two Elkin children due to carbon monoxide poisoning has prompted a heightened awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide.
Elkin Fire Department is strongly encouraging everyone to install a carbon monoxide detector in their homes as well as a smoke detector.
First Alert carbon monoxide detectors are available at Walmart for $18.47.
Oct. 18, Elkin Fire Department and Tri-County Christian Crisis Ministry informed residents that 150 carbon monoxide detectors will also be available at Tri-C to those who cannot afford one.
“After the incident that happened in Elkin, we had First Alert contact our department wanting to donate 150 carbon monoxide detectors,” said Tommy Wheeler, Chief of Elkin Fire Department. “We felt like the best way to distribute them was through Tri-C so people who needed them the most would have a way to get them.”
Individuals wishing to receive a carbon monoxide detector from Tri-C will have to prove they have the kind of heat source that needs a carbon monoxide detector, and will have to provide information about their income versus their expenses, according to Heather Macy, director of Tri-C.
