Elkin natives Alex Duncan and Cameron Burelson will compete at the Powerade State Games of North Carolina for swimming this weekend in Winston-Salem.
ELKIN - Two Elkin natives will be swimming in the Powerade State Games of North Carolina this weekend at the Bolton Park Aquatic Center in Winston-Salem.
Alex Duncan and Cameron Burelson will be competing in multiple events Saturday and Sunday in the largest amateur sporting event in the state.
“I think it’s a good experience to be able to something like this at such a young age,” Duncan explained. “It’s a challenge to help us get to the next level.”
Burelson says it will be a different experience than what he’s used to.
“This has been my first time going through this, but I think it’s going to be a fun thing to do,” he said. “It’s going to be different than what we’ve been doing.”
Duncan, a rising 7th-grader at Elkin Middle, and Burelson, a rising 5th-grader at Elkin Elementary, both swim for the Elkin Wet Lightning and at North Piedmont Aquatic Club (PAC).
The duo are next in a long line of talented swimmers to come out of PAC, joining recent Elkin High graduates and collegiate swimmers Sarah Singleton, Laurenn Singleton and Lakenn Reynolds.
Swimming begins Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Bolton Aquatic Center, and continues Sunday at the same time.
Duncan hopes that big swimming events like this will help the sport grow in the area.
“I think it would be great if more people would swim because people don’t realize how good of a sport it is,” he explained. “But it’s starting to grow as sport.”
