State champion Welborn headlines all-conference lists

ELKIN - Twenty-two female area track and field athletes were honored by the Mountain Valley Conference when the conference released its annual awards last week.

Headlined by 2A high jump state champion Hunter Welborn, Starmount placed four athletes on the end-of-the-year lists. Cousin Samantha Welborn and Emma Sizemore joined Hunter on the all-conference team, while Haley Hartman was named as an honorable mention.

Elkin, who placed third at the conference track meet in April, led the way with seven nominees. Carrie Brown, Madeline Carter, Samantha Dimmette, Madison Durham, Kelsey Nicholson and Sarah Snow garnered all-conference recognition. Carter, Durham, Nicholson and Snow also captured an honorable mention in a second event, joined by Payton Nicholson.

Forbush tied the Lady Elks with six all-conference honorees. Rion Anthony, Kasey Bates, Allyson Lineberry, MaKayla Pendergrass, Laken Renegar and Lindsey Williams were all named to the all-conference list, while Renegar added an honorable mention.

East Wilkes placed five on the final honorary teams. Shakai Ward was the lone all-conference athlete for the Cardinals, while Meredith Nance, McKenzie Stokes, Hannah Welborn and Amber Wood finished as honorable mentions.
