The sound of fiddles and banjos reached across the Yadkin River to the Jonesville Jubilee and up and down Main Street in Elkin Saturday.

Speakers played the sounds of old-time fiddlers who assembled in Elkin’s Crater Park to hold the first Elkin Valley Fiddlers by the River event.

Rain threatened to push the event indoors to the newly renovated Liberty building on Main Street, but despite the clouds earlier in the day the bands were able to perform on a stage in the park.

The audience stretched across the park, some sitting in lawn chairs right in front of the booming speakers and other choosing to sit some distance away on picnic tables.

Six bands played, with each scheduled to play 40 minute sets. However, once the bands got up on stage and the crowd began dancing on the adjacent stages they went over a few minutes.

Elkin Creek Boys Bluegrass Band started things off at 11 a.m., followed by Joe Thrift and the Country Store at noon, the Howell Osborne Band at 1 p.m., the Zephyr Lightning Bolts at 2 p.m., The Fiddler’s Wife at 3 p.m., and Beyond the Blue at 5 p.m.

In between the 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. shows the organizers of the event let anyone who was willing sign up and try their hand during an open mic portion of the show.

The event was slated to run until 10 p.m. but the event ended early prior to 8 p.m.
