MILLERS CREEK - When former Starmount standout Christian Hurt addressed the crowd at West Wilkes on Friday night, he emphatically said he wasn’t “lucky” to still be walking or alive. He said he was blessed.

The Blackhawk community continued to bless the recent graduate, raising nearly $2,000 to put towards] his medical needs fund for his impending neck surgery in Germany next month.

West Wilkes auctioned off four tickets to Appalachian State’s football regular season finale against Furman on November 10, a donated $50 gift package from Chick Fil A and accepted donations to benefit Hurt.

Blackhawk senior Zack Church organized the fundraiser for his senior class project.

In an on-field ceremony after the third quarter of the game, West Wilkes administrators and Church presented Hurt and his mother, Melody, with nearly $2,000 towards his medical needs fund.

Towards the end of the game, Melody thanked the West Wilkes community for their help and announced the total amount raised. She said that the medical needs fund is rapidly approaching the $50,000 milestone.

Hurt will head to Germany next month for a risky neck surgery. The date of the surgery has yet to be set.
