Dr. Dominick Carbone began practicing urology in Elkin five years ago and now has more than 6,000 patients.

“We are grateful to have patients locally and from all over the region, even from Winston-Salem,” said Carbone.

Carbone, who grew up in New Jersey, said he became fascinated with urology almost instantly during medical school at the University of Michigan.

“I decided I wanted to study urology the second I was exposed to it in medical school,” he said.

Carbone graduated from the University of Michigan’s medical school in 1990 and completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania.

Upon finishing his residency, Carbone was recruited by Wake Forest University’s School of Medicine as an assistant professor of the Department of Urology/Division of Surgical Sciences. He taught at Wake Forest for 10 years before starting his own private practice in Elkin.

He has written or co-authored 14 articles in professional journals, given more than 30 presentations on his specialty at regional or national professional meetings and has been an editor and reviewer for The Journal of Urology and The Scientific World publications.

Now, he is in Elkin practicing urology at Yadkin Valley Urology and treats conditions such as bladder cancer, frequent urinary tract infection, prostate cancer, enlarged prostate, kidney stones, incontinence, interstitial cystitis, and testosterone level deficiencies, to name a few.

“I enjoy practicing urology because it’s a fascinating combination of procedures, medical management of diseases and patient contact,” he said.

Carbone said his average work day includes seeing patients, doing surgery at Hugh Chatham and having a good time.

“We enjoy ourselves and like what we do and feel blessed to do it,” he said.
