ELKIN - With the regular season ending Friday night, three area teams saw their seasons continue when the North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the state playoff brackets Saturday.
Elkin, Starmount and East Wilkes all were granted postseason berths, with the Elks and Rams receiving home playoff games.
The Buckin’ Elks, who won four 1A state titles in the early 2000’s, punched their ticket into the playoffs in a big way after a one-year hiatus.
Just one season removed from a 1-9 campaign, Elkin captured the 1A championship with a 42-21 victory over Forbush Friday night.
The Elks finished the season with a 6-4 mark and a 5-3 record in the Mountain Valley Conference. Elkin swept the 1A side of the split conference en route to the title.
Elkin received the No. 1 seed in the 1A West pod and the second overall seed in the West/Midwest pod and will open at home against MVAC foe Alleghany Friday night at Grissom Stadium.
The Elks trounced the Trojans in their regular-season meeting 35-20 on October 12 with Jamiles Hayes scoring four touchdowns on the night.
Despite Friday night’s heartbreaking loss to Wilkes Central in the conference title game, Starmount was granted a home game in the opening round.
The Rams, who finished 9-1 and 7-1, will host Carver out of the Pac-6. The Yellow Jackets finished second in the conference at 4-1 and 5-5 overall.
Starmount was named the fourth seed in the 2A Midwest pod and the sixth overall seed in the West/Midwest pod.
East Wilkes punched its ticket into the postseason on the final night of the season with a 23-8 victory over Ashe County in West Jefferson.
The Cardinals were rewarded with a tough draw against unbeaten and defending 1AA state champion Swain County in the first round.
The Maroon Devils finished the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record and 6-0 in the Smoky Mountain Conference.
