The Elkin High School Journalism Club kicked off with their first meeting on Wednesdays.

Seventeen students attended to discuss story ideas, elect officers and make goals for the year.

The high school teamed with the Elkin Tribune. The Tribune will publish student written stories three times a week starting in October.

Swarey and Tribune reporter Jessica Pickens planned the club over the summer.

“This will give students more exposure. I’ve helped with high school newspapers and nobody read them. This way their work will actually get read,” said the club’s advisor, April Swarey.

Swarey has a newspaper background working with the Wake Weekly and the Raleigh News before starting her teaching career.

Students will meet every Wednesday discuss story ideas and learn reporting skills such as headline writing and proper interview questions to ask.

TheJournalism Club meetings for Elkin High School students will be held every Wednesday after school at 3 p.m. in Room 303.
