PILOT MOUNTAIN - Led by Mary Frances Hall and Annika Winebarger, the Lady Elks golf team compiled a perfect 28-0 record this season en route to a second-place finish at the 2A/1A Central Regional Tournament last weekend at Pilot Knob Park in Pilot Mountain.
Hall led a field of 56 golfers and shot a 79 at regionals to capture the gold medal, finishing one stroke ahead of Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher. Winebarger gave Elkin two medalists with a third-place finish with an 81.
In the team standings, the Elks finished second behind defending state champion Salisbury 266-251. North Surry finished third with a team score of 272.
Hall and Winebarger will lead Elkin to the 2A/1A State Tournament this week at Pinehurst.
Coming off two undefeated seasons and two Mountain Valley Conference Tournament victories, the Lady Elks golf team opened their season at Mountain Aire Golf Course on September 12.
At the conference tournament, Elkin captured its third-straight title at High Meadows Country Club on October 17. The Lady Elks finished 172 strokes ahead of Ashe County, Alleghany, Wilkes Central and Forbush after the final tally.
Hall finished first while establishing a school and conference record with a 2-under 33 at Silo Run Golf Course. Hall bested her own previous 9-hole record of 35.
Winebarger and Kaley Cornelison also posted their best scores of the season at Silo Run with a 39 and 48, respectively. Newest member Jillian Lewis has showed improvement throughout the season, according to coach Sena Hinson.
