One particular grandmother just penned a book geared for children about showing the importance of siblings and teaching how to convert a bully.
It’s all in “Cackle, Packle and Friends,” published by Tate Publishing through author Lucy Wilkes of Hudson. The children’s book intertwines faith, love and community, according to its author.
“I’ve always loved kids,” said Wilkes, who has immediate family in the Elkin area. “They’re so cool and so real. I used to teach Sunday school in Florida. I home-schooled my child and other kids. I’ve always been around children, so I thought writing a book was a perfect fit.”
Wilkes, a hairdresser by day and grandmother by night, is married to Preston. She has two grandchildren, Jordan and Trevor.
When asked what was the reason for writing and releasing a book, Wilkes said it was due to her grandson Jordan James.
“In the fifth grade Jordan was having trouble with reading,” she said. “I told him I would write him a story on Transformers because he loves them and has cases of them.
“Getting kids to read means they need to be connected,” added Wilkes. “It’s just about making reading fun, and keeping them involved,” she said.
Unlike Transformers, some characters of the book are called Metamorphotrons, a name developed by Jordan due to their morphing ability. Jordan has a prime role in the book too. He’s Jar-don, a light blue jelly jar. Jar-don can morph into any type of object so long as it’s round.
Cackle and Packle are unable to morph due to their genetic design. They’re popcorn-looking characters. The duo produce light when they spin and bounce.
The villain of “Cackle, Packle, and Friends” is Flick Bick. Flick is always unhappy. He doesn’t know his creator, has no friends, lives in a complete state of denial, hates diversity, and seeks menace throughout his land.
During escape from a Flick Bick fire-yielding fury, Cackle and Packle spin into a soda can, which produces so much energy that the can pops into the air. Wind transports the can to another part of the world.
Seeking teamwork and to help save the world from destruction, Cackle, Packle, and their new friends make an alliance with Jar-don and crew and return to change Flick Bick’s bullying ways.
